Creating Accessible Social Media Content

Best Practices for Accessible and Inclusive Social Media

Accessible social media content helps ensure everyone can understand and engage with what we share. By designing posts with accessibility in mind, we support people who use assistive technologies such as screen readers, voice assistants, speech‑to‑text tools, screen magnifiers, braille displays, keyboards, and switches.

Core Best Practices (applicable to all platforms)

  • Use plain language: Keep captions concise, avoid jargon and structure content clearly.
  • Write in sentence case: Avoid ALL CAPS if possible (harder for screen readers and readability).
  • Add alt text: Describe images meaningfully (who/what/action/context).
  • Use high contrast visuals: Ensure text stands out from backgrounds.
  • Caption all videos: Include accurate, synced captions (not auto-only).
  • Avoid relying on color alone: Use labels/icons in addition to color cues.
  • Limit emojis and place at end: Screen readers read each emoji aloud.
  • CamelCase hashtags: Example: #HumansofUSI instead of #humansofusi.

Facebook

  • Add alt text to images (edit manually for accuracy).
  • Use native video captions or upload SRT files.
  • Avoid long text blocks—break into short paragraphs.
  • Ensure link previews clearly describe destination content.

Instagram

  • Write custom alt text in advanced settings (don’t rely on auto-generated).
  • Always include on-screen text + captions for Reels and Stories.
  • Keep text overlays centered and readable (avoid edges where UI may cover).
  • Use simple fonts and strong contrasts in graphics.

LinkedIn

  • Add alt text to images and document posts.
  • Keep tone clear and professional, but still easy to read.
  • Use intentional line breaks for readability (especially on mobile).
  • Avoid excessive emojis. Keep them minimal and purposeful.

  • Enable and add image descriptions (alt text) to every visual.
  • Stay within character limits while maintaining clarity.
  • Use threading for longer information instead of cramming text.
  • Avoid overusing hashtags. One to two is best for readability.

YouTube

  • Upload accurate captions (don’t rely solely on auto-captions).
  • Provide descriptive video titles and descriptions.
  • Verbally describe key visuals in the video when possible.
  • Avoid flashing or strobing visuals (accessibility and safety concern).

TikTok

  • Use auto-captions but always edit for accuracy.
  • Add text overlays to reinforce key points.
  • Keep important visuals/text within safe zones (not blocked by UI).
  • Speak clearly and avoid overly fast pacing when possible.

Quick Checklist Before Posting

  • Did I include alt text?
  • Are captions accurate and synced?
  • Is text readable with strong contrast?
  • Is the message clear without relying on visuals alone?
  • Are hashtags and emojis accessible?
