Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Award (EDIC)

Purpose and scope of awards: 

The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Teaching and Research Award supports faculty members who are pursuing scholarly or creative work on a specific project related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or social justice. This award is intended to promote the understanding of and engagement with equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice-related issues. Projects may include innovative approaches in teaching, research, and service. Examples include:

  • Research regarding issues in diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or social justice
  • Course restructuration: “decolonization” of a syllabus—creation of course materials
  • Course and curriculum development to address issues of diversity and inclusion
  • Development of inclusive teaching methods and equity minded practices for the online, hybrid and face to face classroom
  • Interdisciplinary research on issues in social justice
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion based Service-learning projects
  • Development of community-based projects
  • Diversity and Inclusion based approaches to recruitment and retention in liberal arts
  • Development of Training/Workshops/ Mentoring programs related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and or social justice (Teaching inclusively workshops, multicultural programming, etc.)

Recipients of these awards will receive a one-course assigned time in the same semester of the subsequent year (e.g. winners chosen in fall 2023 will receive a one-course assigned time in fall 2024).

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Faculty members who are full time, either on continuous appointment or eligible for such in the College of Liberal Arts, may apply for an award. 
  • Applications (both electronic and hard copies) are due the academic year prior to the award period and must be received in the Dean’s office by 4:30 p.m. March 1.
  • Recipients of the award may not teach an overload course during the semester in which they receive an award, except under exceptional circumstances approved by the Department Chair and the Dean.
  • Recipients of the awards must make themselves available to the Director of the Liberal Arts Colloquium Series and/or a presentation at the CETL symposium to give a presentation on their projects in the academic year following the award.
  • Applications will be reviewed by the LARA committee. The LARA committee will consist of at least one current member of the LA EDIC committee.
  • Recipients of the awards must make themselves available to serve subsequently a two-year term on the LARA committee, if asked. Refusal to serve will deem the recipient ineligible to apply for a LARA for a period of two years.
  • Recipients of the EDIC award may not receive a LARA during the same semester.
  • Recipients of the awards must submit a report to the chair of the LARA committee. This report should document the work completed during the release time.
  • No subsequent EDIC award will be awarded to that faculty member until he/she has submitted this report and documentation on time. Late reports will result in making the recipient ineligible to apply for an EDIC award for a period of one year once the report is received.

Exception: Individuals who are seeking to apply for an EDIC award in two consecutive semesters may do so before submitting their final documentation for the first EDIC award. For example, an individual who applies in Fall 2023 and receives the award for Fall 2024 may also apply for an EDIC award in Spring 2024 to be used in Spring 2025. This exception is capped at two consecutive semesters.

Application Process: The application should be 12-point Times New Roman font and have page numbers and the applicant’s name on all pages. It should contain the following sections:

  • A heading including proposed title, faculty name, faculty rank, previous EDIC awards and LARAs received including semester and year, the date of final report submission, and teaching load.
  • An abstract of the project (250 words maximum), written so that individuals who are NOT experts in your field can understand it. 
  • Indicate the significance of the project to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and/or social justice initiatives in the College of Liberal Arts and to advancing your scholarly agenda (250 words maximum).
  • Indicate how the project relates to existing work in diversity and inclusion and why the project might be of interest to others in the profession (250 words maximum).
  • Give a detailed timeline of your planned work on this project, including any additional time outside of the award period or work already completed.  Identify the scope and extent of work to be completed during the EDIC award and its place in the overall project. This estimate should be realistic about the amount of work that can be accomplished during the award period. (500 words maximum).
  • If the proposed project has multiple authors or investigators, specifically identify the work that will be completed by the EDIC award applicant, and the place of this component in the overall project. (100 words maximum).
  • Identify specific outcomes for the project, including the outlet and proposed date of submission. Examples of viable outcomes include submission of an article in a peer-reviewed journal or an essay in a collection; a paper proposed to be presented at a scholarly conference; a monograph submitted; a creative work that will be submitted for publication, presentation, or showing in a peer reviewed venue; a workshop to be delivered to the community; a course or service learning project on the teaching schedule. (100 words maximum).
  • A brief curriculum vitae showing education, degrees earned, publications, presentations, diversity, equity, and inclusion-based initiatives/leadership, and previous grants, fellowships or awards. (2 pages maximum).
  • memo from the department chair indicating which course will be replaced with the reassigned time for research and how the course will be covered.

Failure to follow format and organizational guidelines will result in an automatic rejection of the proposal.

Selection:

  • The applications will be reviewed and ranked by the LARA committee.  It will be comprised of five full-time faculty members from the College and at least one will be a member of the LA EDIC committee, and chaired by a representative from the Dean’s Office, who will make recommendations to the Dean. The LARA committee will rank the applications using the attached rubric (see attached).
  • Any faculty member who sits on the LARA committee may apply for an award but will be recused from the entire review process that semester. In this case, a senior faculty member from that department or closely related discipline (who is not applying for an EDIC or LARA) will participate in the review process and exercise the committee member’s vote in the committee’s recommendation to the Dean. The senior faculty member will be selected by the Dean’s office.
  • If one or more applications are ranked to be of equal quality, the following will be considered:
    • Number of previous EDIC and LARA awards received.
    • Length of time since the last EDIC and LARA award received.
    • Faculty rank
    • Teaching load
    • Feasibility of completing the proposed work
Application Submission Instructions 
  1. Submit an intent to apply for internal grant application form no later than February 16, 2024. The form can be found on the OSPRA website: https://usisurvey.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0CHwZqIvttLwY3H

  2. Once OSPRA has received the intent to apply notice, your proposal file will be created in CAYUSE. You will be notified by email that you have been added as a user to a proposal and can start filling in the application.

  3. Access CAYUSE 424 through MyUSI on the USI website usi.edu.
    • Use your USI credentials to log-in to myUSI
    • Look for the CAYUSE 424 icon under USI Online Services:

    5. Submit the proposal for routing through CAYUSE 424 no later than 4:30 p.m. on March 1, 2024.

 

Note: To submit your proposal you will need to approve the proposal in CAYUSE by checking the box next to your name in the routing and approval section. The CAYUSE 424 routing feature allows your department chair and dean to approve the application.
