Double Log Cabin

Behind the David Lenz House at 324 North Street
Temporarily closed for maintenance

Built: Wood and construction dated to late April 1852
Original Use: Family residence
Architecture: Double log cabin with middle porch area (dogtrot), which was at one time enclosed as a third room. Today, the building is set up as a single-family dwelling with a kitchen on one side and a living room on the other.

The Double Log Cabin was originally located in northern Posey County, Indiana, and first occupied by the Bailey Family. It was later moved closer to New Harmony by the Blaffer Foundation. The University of Evansville used the cabin as a pottery studio for about 10 years before Historic New Harmony, Inc. bought the building in 1977 and restored it. Today, the Double Log Cabin serves to illustrate frontier construction techniques in this area of Indiana.

Access: Interior accessible during guided tours and educational programs. The Double Log Cabin is not always featured on the New Harmony History Tour, so we recommend asking your interpreter to stop at this site.
