Jaquess Parlor

Next to 1830 Owen House at 531 Tavern Street

Built: Moved and restored (represents 1830s-era interior)
Original Use: Farmhouse parlor
Architecture: Frame structure, preserving original stencil work

Next to the 1830 Owen House is another exhibit that presents the works of the folk artist Jacob Maentel and stencil work from that period. When you go inside on one of our guided tours, you are greeted with an entry hall and a parlor of a farmhouse that was located near Poseyville, Indiana. This farmhouse belonged to the Jaquess Family. 

When the house was being torn down, Historic New Harmony decided to preserve the stenciling done inside. Architect Rose Broz of New Harmony removed 11 layers of wallpaper and restored parts of the stenciled walls using the originals as reference. 

Access: Interior accessible during guided tours only. The Jaquess Parlor is not always featured on the New Harmony History Tour, so we recommend asking your interpreter to stop at this site.
