Angel in front of a Washington, Indiana, signShout out to our student leaders! Today get to know sophomore Angel Ortega Lopez, president of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) club. He is from Washington, Indiana, and is majoring in computer science, with a minor in mathematics. In addition to ACM, he is involved with Rim Rockers and Westwood Young Adult Bible Studies.

What are some of your favorite classes or experiences at Romain College?
Some of my favorite experiences in the Romain College have to be working in the Biometrix Discovery Lab. Not many universities allow undergraduate students to work alongside professors in their research and that is something.

Why did you choose computer science and mathematics are your major and minor?
I did FIRST Robotics in high school, and I always enjoyed being on the software team.

What advice do you have for incoming freshmen? What do you wish someone had told you?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. You’ll never know the connections a person has.

Tell us more about ACM and why USI students should get involved with it!
ACM is the USI chapter of the National ACM organization. Our club focuses on having hands-on coding workshops, networking, and social events.

What are three things on your bucket list?

  • Visit other countries
  • Go to Disneyland or World
  • Go to San Francisco
