Dr. Brian McGuire, Professor of Accounting and Associate Dean of the Romain College of Business, was awarded the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) R. Lee Brummet Exemplary Educator Award in June at IMA’s 2026 Accounting and Finance Conference in Tampa, Florida.
The R. Lee Brummet Award, which has been given annually since 1988, recognizes an IMA volunteer academic member who has distinguished themselves for significant achievement in the management, accounting and finance professions.
During the ceremony, it was stated that, “Dr. McGuire has demonstrated leadership and promoted the value of management accounting and the financial management career paths through research, teaching, faculty leadership, and service. He serves as a role model for business educators and is highly valued within the IMA community.”
McGuire has broad leadership experience, having served as a director on several global boards. In addition, he served as global President of the Board of Trustees for the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA) and as global President for Beta Alpha Psi (the honor organization for financial information students and professionals at AACSB-accredited universities). McGuire also served as global Chair of the Board of Directors for the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and as global President of the Board of Trustees for the IMA Research Foundation.
In addition to the Exemplary Educator Award, McGuire has received numerous honors and awards for his work and service.
The Brummet Award was named in honor of Dr. R. Lee Brummet, who was the Willard J. Graham Distinguished Professor of Accounting at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Brummet helped launch the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification, serving on the planning group and on the first ICMA® (Institute of Certified Management Accountants) Board of Regents.
