Biology

The Biology program at USI prepares students for success in today’s most exciting and in-demand scientific fields. From day one, you’ll gain hands-on experience in labs and fieldwork, working directly with expert faculty mentors, never graduate assistants.

Biology

Do Science from Day One

As a USI Biology major, you’ll develop the skills to think critically, conduct research, and solve real-world problems. Our students have published in peer-reviewed journals, presented at international science conferences, and earned nationally competitive scholarships through research collaborations with faculty.

USI’s Biology Department faculty offer a broad range of specialties and backgrounds including behavioral ecology, botany, entomology, evolution, genetics, cell and molecular biology, physiology, microbiology, and virology. Whether you plan to pursue graduate school, medical school, or a career in biotechnology, healthcare, or environmental science, you’ll graduate with the experience and confidence to succeed.

Pre-Professional Pathway Programs

Pre-Medicine

The Bachelor of Medicine, B/MD program is a dual program offered through USI and Indiana University School of Medicine. Accepted applicants receive full undergraduate tuition to USI and a provisional seat at IU School of Medicine.

Pre-Chiropractic

The USI Biology Program offers a 3+3 Dual Degree program with Logan University College of Chiropractic. Students complete 3 years at USI and 3 years at Logan University while earning both a BS in Biology and a DC degree.

Pre-Medical Laboratory Science

USI partners with Good Samaritan (Vincennes, IN) and Owensboro Health for Medical Laboratory Science programs. Begin at USI, transition to an MLS program, and graduate with both a bachelor’s degree and MLS certification.

Pre-Pharmacy

USI offers dual-degree pharmacy options with Sullivan University and Manchester University. Earn a B.S. in Biology, Biochemistry, or Chemistry and a PharmD in as few as six years, with advanced opportunities in Pharmacogenomics through Manchester’s programs.

Dr. Nathan Oakley '09, Asst Director, Deaconess Family Medicine Residency Program

"The B/MD program was a great asset in my journey. The program allowed me to focus on education and personal growth without the worry and distraction regarding medical school acceptance. I also appreciated the comradery with fellow B/MD recipients throughout undergrad studies and medical school. I loved my time spent at USI..."I loved my time spent at USI. I had great experiences learning with my peers both in classroom and out. Faculty were passionate and challenging, which prepared me well to transition into medical school and beyond."

Jordan Heitman-Kidd ’11, Attorney at Wagner Reese

"My USI Biology degree has been instrumental in my career path. I am able to use the science and healthcare knowledge that I learned at USI daily in my law practice. The USI Biology program provided ample hands-on opportunities to learn practical skills, explore career interests, and hone my confidence in my own abilities. The professors were accessible and invested in the success of their students. I am grateful for my USI education and have very fond memories of my time there. The smaller class sizes also fostered collaborative learning, which turned into an opportunity to make lifelong friends who are also seeing impressive professional success."

Dr. Steven Mah, DDS '29, Biology (Pre-Dentistry)

Lauren Monroe '24, Biology

Molecular Technologist, "While at USI I was able to gain valuable lab experience working as a student assistant in the microbiology lab with Professor Stephanie Bush. She taught me so much and because of this I was able to pursue a career in a diagnostics laboratory as soon as I graduated. The Biology department emphasizes hands on learning which is incredibly important when entering into a career in science. "

Dr. Robin Verble '06, Associate Professor of Biology, Missouri University of Science & Technology

"USI’s Biology Department was my first academic home. It was where I learned what I was passionate about and found mentors who I wanted to model in my future teaching and research programs. I spent my time at USI figuring out what kind of biologist I wanted to be, and the faculty were really supportive of that period of discovery and curiosity— I worked in multiple labs, was able to take a diversity of coursework, and had opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities that expanded my worldview and helped me refine my interests."
