Selection Process

Students earning the scholarship will be independently accepted into the undergraduate program at the University of Southern Indiana and the medical degree program at Indiana University School of Medicine.

The following procedure will be followed:

  1. Applications will be sent to the B/MD Advisory Committee at the Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana. You must also submit an application for admission to the University of Southern Indiana. You will not be considered for the scholarship without having applied to USI.
  2. The B/MD advisory committee will arrange for qualified candidates to have an interview with members of that committee.
  3. Applications from selected qualified students will then be forwarded to the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine.
  4. After successful completion of pre-medical coursework at USI, final selection and admission to the School of Medicine will be the responsibility of the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine

Neither acceptance into the University of Southern Indiana nor a recommendation to forward the student’s application to the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine guarantees acceptance by the School of Medicine. Selected students will have a provisional seat in Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville.

Retention & Progression

Students awarded the B/MD scholarship must meet defined criteria to claim the provisional seat reserved in the Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville. Those criteria are as follows:

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 for the first 31 undergraduate hours and a cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 from 62 hours until Baccalaureate degree is completed.
  • Students must take the MCAT and obtain a score equal to the average of the previous year’s entering class at Indiana University School of Medicine.
  • Completion of required coursework including courses designed specifically for the B/MD program.
  • Completion of the AMCAS application and interview for the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Students may major in any field but must complete specified courses for this program and application to medical school. You can find more details about the B/MD in our scholarship guidelines. If a student fails to meet the above requirements, they will not be allowed to matriculate directly into the Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville. The student may seek admission to the School of Medicine through normal pathways, including the interview.

Scholarship Support & Advising

Six students will be selected each year. The University of Southern Indiana will provide full tuition waivers for the undergraduate portion of the program, not to exceed eight academic semesters (scholarship guidelines). In addition students will be allowed to keep the David L. Rice scholarship.

Each B/MD student will have funding available for undergraduate research projects.

If a student fails to maintain the required GPA, they will be dismissed from the program and their level of scholarship will drop back to the level of the departmental scholarship awarded upon application as a freshman at the University of Southern Indiana (assuming the student meets the minimum grade point average requirements for that scholarship).

The USI B/MD coordinator will advise the students with aid from the B/MD advisory committee.

Success Stories

Dr. Lexis Will '18

"I will forever be grateful for my time spent at USI as a BMD scholar. I felt so prepared to enter medical school thanks to the guidance and education from faculty, as well as the camaraderie and support from my fellow pre-medicine and BMD peers. The BMD scholarship helped streamline the process, and definitely lifted the financial burden associated with the educational commitment required to become a physician. I would absolutely recommend USI for anyone interested in pursuing a career in medicine."

Dr. Nathan Oakley '09

"The B/MD program was a great asset in my journey through medical education. The program allowed me to focus on education and personal growth without the worry and distraction regarding medical school acceptance. I also appreciated the camaraderie with fellow B/MD recipients throughout undergrad studies and medical school. I loved my time spent at USI...

Dr. Evan Stieler '17

"The USI Pre-medicine program provided me with the perfect environment to grow and realize my potential. The program’s low student-to-faculty ratio allowed me to be an active participant in class discussions, which created a more enjoyable learning environment that fostered greater comprehension. The courses in the program are designed to continually readdress important topics—seeing important material multiple times helped me solidify my understanding. In addition, my professors were always available and willing to address any confusion that I had about the material. My experience at USI deepened my love for biochemistry and prepared me exceptionally well for medical school. I could not have picked a better undergraduate institution than USI!"
