The College of Liberal Arts offers students the opportunities, first, to develop the fundamentals of a liberal education upon which to base a lifetime of learning and, second, to concentrate in studies that form the foundation for professional pursuits.

Employer surveys show that liberal arts degrees are in high demand. Today's employers place high value on strong communication, critical thinking, complex problem solving, information literacy and other elements of a traditional liberal arts education.

What We Offer

The college offers more than 30 majors and emphases and a similar number of minors. Students interested in teaching careers may seek education licensing via a teaching major in English, History, Visual Art, or World Languages and Cultures (French, German, or Spanish), or a teaching minor in Art, English, Journalism, Language Arts, Social Science, or Theatre Education.

Departments


Art and Design

The Art and Design Department is a place where students can come to achieve their artistic goals and advance their technical and conceptual skills, cultivate critical thinking, and fulfill their creative potential. Through the study of one of our seven academic concentrations, students become prepared for an array of creative pursuits.

Communication and Media

Communications is one of the most dynamic industries in the nation, employing more than a million people and providing hundreds of different career opportunities. The Communications Department at the University of Southern Indiana offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree options in four fields of study and a Master's degree as well.

Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary approach to studying agencies of social control and crime-related issues. A degree in Criminal Justice provides students with diverse knowledge that emphasizes lifelong learning, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

English

In an age of constant communication—electronic, written, spoken and personal—success in today's world depends on a person's ability to understand and use language. This is precisely what an English major trains students to do. Through the study of literature and writing, the English program prepares students to communicate effectively, think creatively and, live wisely in a diverse world.

Global Studies

The demand for graduates in global studies is growing fast in the private sector and in government. Job opportunities include international, government and non-government organizations, foreign trade, diplomacy, international law, marketing, health administration, foreign affairs, defense, intelligence, foreign aid, humanitarian services, politics, education, language services and journalism.

History

History offers original and indispensable ways of looking at human experience because it distinguishes and evaluates continuity amid the forces of change. By means of historical inquiry, the modern world is seen as shaped by the past.

Performing Arts

The University of Southern Indiana's Performing Arts department provides the breadth of a liberal arts education while allowing students to pursue professional training in performance, as well as design and theatre technologies, in the theatre arts major and the music minor.

Political Science, Public Administration, and Philosophy

Political science majors are some of the most articulate and dynamic students at USI. They acquire experience in campaign, legislative and nonprofit internships. Philosophy majors are some of the best regarding analytical, critical thinking, verbal, and quantitative reasoning skills.

World Languages and Cultures

The faculty of the department of World Languages and Cultures is committed to providing students with language skills and cultural knowledge for professional and academic careers in the 21st century. We foster and strengthen communication among widely diverse constituencies at home and abroad through outreach programs, sustained partnerships and international study. As language-sensitive and language-functional citizens, we foster respect for others.
