Program Goals and Student Learning Outcomes

At a minimum, the JRC-DMS requires the following outcomes be publicly published for CAAHEP-accredited sonography programs: 

  • Student retention
  • Job Placement
  • Test Takers Rate
  • Credential Success Rates for Sonography Physics and Instrumentation (SPI), Abdomen (AB), Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN), Vascular Technology (VT) and Adult Echocardiography (AE)

Program Goals


General Sonography and Echocardiography Specialty

To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains for the Abdominal Sonography-Extended, Obstetrics and Gynecology Sonography and Adult Cardiac Sonography concentrations.


General Sonography and Vascular Specialty

To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains for the Abdominal Sonography-Extended, Obstetrics and Gynecology Sonography and Vascular Sonography concentrations.

Student Learning Outcomes


To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge) domain, the student will:

  1. Evaluate cross-sectional anatomical structures.
  2. Distinguish anatomical structures and sonographic appearances.
  3. Apply clinical history to sonographic examination and findings.
  4. Employ ultrasound physics and instrumentation to optimize sonographic images.

To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the psychomotor (skills) domain, the student will:

  1. Develop the technical skills and critical thinking skills to produce sonographic images of diagnostic quality.
  2. Demonstrate competency to independently perform sonographic examinations in the Abdominal-Extended, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Vascular or Adult Cardiac clinical courses.

To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the affective (behavior) learning domain, the student will:

  1. Practice independently as well as a team member.
  2. Promote professional behavior to all through integrity, ethical decision making and communication.
  3. Practice quality techniques in the provision of care to all patients using evidence-based practices.
  4. Cultivate a professional work ethic through interprofessional collaboration.

The student will:

  1. Successfully complete mock certification exams.
  2. Pass three ARDMS certification exams within a one-year period of eligibility.

III. Participate in activities to prepare for lifelong learning.

    The student will:

      1. Participate in at least one continuing medical education event.
      2. Volunteer for a university or community event.

    IV. Understand global trends and issues in healthcare that may have an impact on sonography practices.

    The student will:

      1. Demonstrate the ability to locate and synthesize research to stay informed of current trends in sonography education and practice.
      2. Compare and contrast domestic and international clinical and healthcare management.

    V. Demonstrate skills appropriate for entry-level sonographers.

    1. Students are pleased with the overall program quality and their preparation as an entry-level sonographer.
    2. Employers are pleased with the overall quality of this program's graduate as an entry-level sonographer.
