During the Internship

Professional Conduct

Interns must follow all organizational and university professional standards, including:

  • Ethical behavior, confidentiality, and HIPAA/OSHA requirements

  • Professional communication

  • Proper attire and attendance

  • No personal business during work hours

  • Compliance with KCNHP Social Media Policy (violations result in removal from internship)

Schedule & Attendance

  • Internship dates align with the start and end of the semester.
  • Internships cannot begin until HP475 is complete, HP480 registration is confirmed, and CastleBranch is fully cleared.

  • Schedule must be posted to Blackboard and updated with any changes.

    • Unforeseen circumstances may arise that may interfere with internship attendance. It is imperative that communication be made with all parties involved (internship coordinator and preceptor) to adjust the schedule and semester timeline if necessary.
  • Students may NOT attend internship sites on days the university is officially closed.

Required Activities

  • Maintain weekly hour logs and activity summaries signed by the Preceptor.

  • Develop measurable learning goals during the first week.

  • Complete at least one substantial project agreed upon with the Preceptor.

    • The project will be decided in consultation with your Preceptor. Your Preceptor will familiarize you with the overall functions/activities of your site and help you to identify appropriate projects. A summary of the experience will be discussed as part of your reflection assignment.
  • Participate in classroom meetings and complete a midterm review.

    • Attendance to periodic internship class meetings is mandatory (please notify your Preceptor of upcoming scheduled meetings so you may be excused from your scheduled internship hours if needed - meeting time does not count towards your required contact hours). You will discuss strategies so you can get the most benefit from your internship experience.
    • Class meetings scheduling will vary and be determined each semester.
    • You are responsible for coordinating a time with your Preceptor and faculty instructor for a midterm review. The meeting can be by phone or face-to-face and will last about an hour. You should plan several weeks before to schedule the meeting date. This is a mandatory requirement for successful completion of the Internship.
  • Submit all assignments, evaluations, and documentation via Blackboard.

  • Complete a final reflection report (details in Appendix IV).

Internship Grade

A "pass" or "no pass" grade will be recorded upon completion of the internship hours and all requirements.  See the Course Syllabus for further details.

A Pass/No Pass grade does not impact your GPA.
