I. Introduction

University of Southern Indiana’s (USI) Kinney College of Nursing and Health Professions (KCNHP) Clinical Simulation Center (CSC) has been at the forefront of simulation technology since its formation. The CSC serves as a resource for the entire KCNHP supporting individual program use and promoting interprofessional education. The CSC works in partnership with grant opportunities, including but not limited to the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) and Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (SWI-AHEC).

To Be Determined

Vision
The USI Kinney College vision statement is “Shaping health and wellness through learning, engagement, and innovation.”

Mission
The mission statement “The College of Nursing and Health Professions is an inclusive learning community that influences health and wellness through leadership and excellence in teaching, research, practice, and community engagement. We prepare individuals to shape health care through the use of evidence-based practice and interprofessional collaboration.”

“Prepare health professions students to deliver safe quality care through the integration of dynamic simulation methodologies and interprofessional education.”

“Promote healthy communities through simulation-based teaching and interprofessional education.”

The USI KCNHP CSC utilizes the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) Simulationist Code of Ethics. The codes’ six aspirational values of integrity, transparency, mutual respect, professionalism, accountability, and results orientations strive to foster an ethical culture among all individuals and organizations involved in healthcare simulation. The Simulationist Code of Ethics can be accessed and read on the Society for Simulation in Healthcare website.

Please refer to Appendices A and B (Organizational Charts).

1. Simulation Committee
The Clinical Simulation Committee includes KCNHP faculty with the goal of representing all programs, two Technology Team members, and a SWI-AHEC employee. The Simulation Committee has two co-chairs, the Clinical Simulations Coordinator, and the Director of Instructional Resources and Simulation. The simulation committee will meet twice during both the fall and spring semesters. The Simulation Committee serves in an advisory capacity to the Clinical Simulation Center. The overarching goal of the committee is to advance simulation within the KCNHP by providing oversight and reviewing current simulation practices.

Simulation-based experiences (SBE) are integral to KCNHP programs and are integrated at varying levels. The majority of KCNHP students’ first exposure to the CSC occurs when they tour the Center during their USI 101 Course or campus visits. Additional opportunities for experiential learning within the CSC are embedded periodically throughout most KCNHP program’s curricula where SBE’s will enhance didactic content.

All individuals who participate in activities and events in the USI KCNHP CSC are expected to adhere to the CSC Student Guidelines (Appendix C), posted at the entrance of the CSC and the Statement of Consent. This adherence helps ensure student safety by correct handling of simulation-based equipment.

The CSC serves to provide a learning resource for all Nursing and Health Professions majors. Activities and events held in the CSC are intended to simulate realistic clinical environments to promote experiential learning. Since the equipment in the CSC is delicate and expensive, guidelines must be followed to protect it from damage. Specific guidelines for the use of equipment and conduct within the CSC can be found within the CSC student guidelines.

While in the Clinical Simulation Center (CSC) and all other learning venues, simulation interactions may include but are not limited to human patient simulators, standardized patients, peer to peer role play, virtual reality, and augmented reality. You are expected to treat all of these interactions as real patient experiences. Faculty/Instructors, CSC staff, and students are expected to adhere to and uphold all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and any other federal or state laws requiring confidentiality.

The CSC is equipped to record both audio and visual. You will be recorded while participating in activities or simulations in the CSC and other learning venues.

You must contact your program chair in advance of the simulation activity to opt out of being recorded or photographed. An alternative assignment may be required by your instructor.

Your participation is acknowledgment and consent to being audio/visual recorded and or photographed. These recordings/photographs are property of USI and may be used for educational, debriefing, IRB-approved research, and or an as-yet-determined use. This acknowledgment applies to all past recordings and photographs as well. You also accept that it is a breach of conduct to bring outside audio/visual equipment into the CSC and other learning venues to record or take photographs without express permission. Uploading video recordings or photographs taken during simulation to any social media platform without express permission from the University of Southern Indiana is a direct violation of this agreement.

Concerns, a verbal or written expression of dissatisfaction and/or grievances, a wrong or injustice, can be brought forth by students, educators, and CSC staff. Concerns and/or grievances can be reported in many ways, including verbal or written communication or through a post-simulation survey. When possible, specific issues will first be addressed with the individual bringing forth the complaint. If conflict resolution cannot be found, the concern or grievance will be taken to the next person in the chain of command. The CSC chain of command starts first with the: Clinical Simulations Coordinator and then progresses as indicated to the Director of Instructional Resources and Simulation, Program Chairs, Assistant Deans, and finally to the Dean if the situation has not been resolved. CSC staff will address concerns and grievances promptly.

Student grievances and concerns regarding course grades or clinical skill performance within the CSC will be addressed by course-specific faculty.

The CSC Policy and Procedures Handbook is developed, revised, and approved by the CSC Committee and the KCNHP Dean. Policies will be reviewed on an annual basis for relevancy and continued use by the CSC Committee.

II. General Clinical Simulation Center Policies and Procedures

The CSC is located in the Lower Level of the Health Professions Center and is open from 8:00 am-4:30 pm Monday through Friday and after hours by appointment.

CSC staff must be contacted in advance to schedule events that will take place outside of the hours of operation.

It is the policy of the KCNHP to maintain and update all equipment routinely to ensure proper functioning. Equipment that requires regular recalibration is done so by a third party.

Prior to each semester, supplies and Inventory are reordered and restocked as needed. If faculty notice supplies are running low or there is a new supply needed, CSC staff should be notified promptly to ensure all supplies are present for each simulation.

Faculty and students should report any damage, malfunctioning, or missing equipment/furniture/supplies to CSC staff.

Simulation supplies are provided by CSC staff. Following simulation or skills check-off, students and faculty are expected to leave the space in its pre-simulation/pre-check off state unless told otherwise by the CSC staff.

Sharps/needles are to be used only when necessary and are stored securely in the CSC work room closet (HPL064).

All supplies utilized in the CSC are for simulation education use only.

CSC staff budget for ongoing supply needs on an annual basis. The CSC maintains a calendar of activities with a supply list for each activity as well as an extensive supply inventory.

Supplies and equipment are purchased from approved vendors through BuyUSI by the Director of Instructional Resources and Simulation. Multiple vendors are used following BuyUSI purchasing procedures.

1. Donations
Donated medicines, equipment, and supplies must be delivered directly to CSC staff with advance notice. Donations are kept separate until they are reviewed for appropriate disposal or use. Any donations kept are marked, as appropriate, with a label “Not for human use. Education only” or similar marking stating “Not for human or animal use”
