Planning for the Internship

Early Planning (Freshman/Sophomore)

  • Review your academic plan and make sure you are on track to complete internship prerequisites.
  • Consider financial, transportation, and scheduling needs related to completing an internship.
  • Explore healthcare settings and career areas that interest you.
  • Talk with upper-level students about their internship experiences.
  • Get involved in student organizations such as HOSA, STELLAR, and Sigma Phi Omega.
  • Begin discussing your career interests and goals with your advisor or faculty members.

Junior/Senior Planning

  • Start discussing with your academic advisor when you plan to complete HP475: Professionalism in Healthcare and HP480: Internship in Health Professions.

  • Confirm that you will meet the GPA and prerequisite requirements for the internship.

  • During HP475: Professionalism in Healthcare, you will:

    • Begin researching potential internship sites and identifying the types of experiences that interest you.

    • Consider how your internship can support your career goals.

    • Prepare your résumé and other application materials.

    • Be prepared to interview with potential internship sites.

  • Work with the Internship Coordinator to finalize your internship plans and timeline.
