Kara DoucetKara Willett Doucet, DNP, APRN, AGACNP-BC, CCRN
Assistant Professor of Nursing

Where are you from originally? I am originally from Henderson, Kentucky.

Do you still practice as a nurse practitioner? Yes. I currently practice with the Deaconess Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine Group.

Who or what inspired you to pursue nursing as a career? I was inspired by the ability to blend science, critical thinking and compassionate care to meaningfully impact patients and families during their most vulnerable moments. My ICU experience early in my career solidified that passion.

Where did you receive your BSN and graduate degree(s) and what years? I completed my BSN in 2008 and my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in 2015, both from the University of Kentucky.

Who or what inspired you to return to school for an NP degree? I returned to graduate school to advance my clinical knowledge, expand my scope of practice and contribute at a higher level in acute and critical care. I wanted to serve not only as a provider, but also as an educator supporting patients and developing future clinicians. Additionally, working closely with critically ill patients and their families inspired me to pursue a role where I could be honest, compassionate and supportive during end-of-life conversations. Being able to clearly communicate prognosis, guide families through difficult decisions and provide comfort at some of the hardest moments in life is one of the most meaningful responsibilities of advanced practice.

Anything else you would like to add? I am passionate about critical care, graduate nursing education and advancing the professional identity of advanced practice providers. I also enjoy spending time with my family, traveling to the beach (and Disney!) and mentoring students and new clinicians.
