The SANE training participants will learn the specific protocols in the care and examination of sexual assault victims, including the different aspects of the sexual assault physical examination (history taking, evidence collection, documentation, etc.), as well as how to preserve specimens and ensure chain of custody. In addition, attendees are exposed to members of a Sexual Assault Response Team, and will participate in a mock trial for a better understanding of legal proceedings. Prior to the five-day in-person training, each participant must complete a 24-hour online, self-study module.
Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and USI Kinney College of Nursing and Health Professions Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning are collaborating with regional partners to host this training. Instructors include SANE-trained and SANE-certified nurses, Indiana State Police forensic scientists, law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys and victim support specialists.
Recognizing the importance of participation across different agencies, the training will not be limited to nurses. The following are considered potential participants: law enforcement, advocates, prosecutors, health care professionals, students and social workers.

The University of Southern Indiana Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Fee includes access to the online program and the live program along with all resources and handouts. Lunch is also included on the live day of the program.
The program requires a minimum of 5 participants.
We reserve the right to cancel any offering if there is insufficient enrollment. Registered participants will be notified in advance and fully refunded if this occurs.
A $50 administrative fee will be charged for cancelled registrations prior to January 31, 2027. No refund will be provided after that date.
