"For 22 years I worked at Memorial Hospital where I traveled through a rewarding and dynamic nursing career allowing me to lead, learn, teach, and master the craft," says Abby Schmitt, MSN, RN, MEDSURG-BC. "During that time, I worked at the bedside in MedSurg, served as a clinical educator and leader, developed policies and procedures, shared podium and poster presentations, led organizational initiatives and committees, walked the stage at Magnet conference, and served on the Memorial Foundation Board to name a few highlights."
This year, Abby decided to channel her multifaceted skills towards a new challenge. "My current role is a Registered Nurse Care Advisor for Innovative Healthcare Collaborative of Indiana (IHCI), bringing my expertise to improve population health and coordinate care for high-risk patients across healthcare settings." she says. "I’m thrilled to apply my experience in a fresh impactful way and continue learning and growing. In nursing, you can always evolve your professional identity and find new avenues for impact."
Abby earned my ASN, BSN and MSN (Nursing Education) degrees from USI, where she experienced firsthand the academic rigor, high professional standards and supportive faculty that distinguish USI Nursing. "The program and campus cultivated a great environment for me to prepare for and grow within the healthcare landscape and opened doors to career opportunities," she says. "I’m grateful for my roots which continue to drive my passion for the profession, focus on high-quality patient care, and commitment to servant leadership. I feel the education I’ve received has had an impact beyond my own career—it continues to have a ripple effect through the nursing professionals I’ve educated, mentored and supported, as well as the many patient lives I’ve been able to touch in a positive way. I’m thankful that USI was a part of my journey and career success."
